Programs and gadgets for Personal Response Systems

Common personal response system uses a combination of hardware and software in order to grant data, questions, feedback and responses as well. The instructor have to lay out his data before turning on the software and plugging in the hardware, in form of the receiver. Participants should not be bothered by tweaking the system in any way, because their duty is to register the clicker with the software and its all great.

Programs needed for Personal Response Systems

Whilst usage of PowerPoint is adequate in the most cases, some favour innovative PRS software. In any case, software lets the professor select the kind of the question which may be multiple answers, yes/no , numeric or in form of short answers. There is an option to setup the question in the software itself, but the presenter can always do that by himself as well. Afterwards, students or participants can input their choice via remote or so called "clicker" and answers might be displayed on the screen if needed. The teacher, profesor or presenter then may save the results and use them for additional investigation.

Which gadgets do you need for ARS?

In the most basic form, these systems consist of presenter's receiver and remotes / clickers that are held by the students/participants.

Remote for ARS looks like a simplified remote control for televison, with a minor indicator light and a keypad as well. On the other hand, sophisticated remotes are available if needed, with special functions such as presenting the results on the display or showing current battery life.

These remotes require batteries that mostly last a couple of hours, which is more than enough in most cases.

2nd part of the hardware, receivers, are kinda complicated. Two of them are InfraRed and Radio Frequency.

Infrared systems need to be in "line-of-sight" to operate properly, which could be a concern in some cases. These sort of systems generally show beneficial results in smaller groups. Addiontal receivers are needed if you opt for using these system in bigger groups.

If you want to spend more money on quality system, then your best option is the radio frequency system. Radio Frequency Systems are the best-buy choice for bigger groups of over 2000 students or participants.
